PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Literature searches: compilation of literature search reports; Assistance in the compilation of Research Investigation Proposals, including proposed experimental work and budgets; Execution of experimental programs, including construction, procurement of materials and equipment, analyses and interpretation of results; Assistance in the preparation of reports on completed experimental programs.
EXPERIENCE / KEY PROJECTS: Microwave depolymerisation of poly (methyl methacrylate), PMMA or Perspex, (April 1997 - September 1998): Member of multi-disciplinary project team in the development (at bench scale) of a microwave process for the depolymerisation of PMMA. Major responsibilities included construction, operation, and disassembly / cleaning of reactor and procurement of materials and equipment.
Iron Oxide Pigment Project (July 1996 - March 1997): Development of synthetic routes to black iron oxide pigments from a waste sulphuric acid stream, using ammonia route; Laboratory and bench scale experiments.
TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE: Familiar with the majority of Instrumental Analyses techniques, principles and interpretation of results and spectra. Analyses techniques included GC, Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), HPLC, Thermogravimetric Differential Thermal Analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) methods, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) methods, X-ray Diffraction Particle Size Analyses, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy, Infrared (IR) Spectrometry, Atomic Absorption (AA) spectroscopy and Surface Area determinations (nitrogen absorption). Laboratory experience in powder technology (milling, sieving, and mixing), high temperature furnaces (ceramic tube-, high voltage-, resistive molybdenum-, muffle furnaces), organic syntheses, wet chemistry syntheses, wet chemistry analyses, pH control and automation (utilizing Program Logic Control (PLC) and SCADA software).
REASON FOR LEAVING: Due to uncertainty of the future of AECI Limited R&DD in light of proposed restructuring of AECI Limited, I felt it was necessary to obtain a more secure position.
3 July 1992- : Research Technician, Solid State Chemistry Group and Self Propagating September 1996 High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) Section, AECI Limited, R&DD, Modderfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa.
PRICIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: Procurement and construction of equipment ; Execution of laboratory programs, including data recording and compilation; Conducted appropriate chemical analyses.
EXPERIENCE / KEY PROJECTS: Iron Oxide Pigment Project (June 1994 - June 1996): Development of laboratory scale synthetic routes to yellow and black iron oxide pigments from a waste sulphuric acid stream, using caustic soda route; Laboratory and bench scale experiments; Automation of laboratory scale apparatus through MicroVAX / PLC system.
Synthesis of Tungsten Carbide (January - December 1993): Reduction of tungsten trioxide under hydrogen and direct carburisation of tungsten trioxide and carbon to form tungsten carbide; A kinetic study (TG-DTA) of the reduction of tungsten trioxide in hydrogen (in fulfilment of the requirements for the H. N. Dip.: Chem.).
Solid state synthesis of calcium and sodium carbides (January - December 1992).
